Have you ever noticed how romantic couples tend to consist of one person who is good with money and the other who is not as into managing it? Or how one person may be business-minded and the other is happy-go-lucky with an inclination toward endless fun and excitement? Not every couple is this way, but you don’t have to look too far to find some opposites who have paired.
I think it was Dr. James Dobson who said something like, “Before marriage, opposites attract; but, after marriage, opposites aggravate.” Ummm, yes! Yes! And, yes! This is one of the truest statements ever uttered. We are so drawn to the differences we see in our sweethearts as they intrigue us, but they are those differences that cause us to pull our hair out some days.
Why can’t you just live on the budget we made?
Why can’t you just stop working and have some fun?
Why can’t you put your dirty clothes where they belong?
Why can’t you stop worrying about every detail in the world?
With all the stress and personality squabbles couples face, sometimes we just need to let our hair down and be silly together. Live, laugh, and let off steam. Here are a few silly ideas:
- Make Up Songs
A few years ago when Rebecca Black’s song, Friday, was all the “rage,” Eric and I made up a fun parody about our dog. I would have surely enjoyed the experience more if Eric had not been planning to upload our song, complete with video, to Youtube. Being silly for the world to see is not as easy for me as it is for Eric, so I struggled a bit with this “project.” At any rate, we had fun writing the song, Eric had a friend take some pictures and shoot video – and before long, our “music video” was up and ready to go. For some super-silly inspiration, feel free to check it out here. - Dress Up for a Ridiculous Photo Shoot with Friends
We are simply never too old to play dress up – and dress up does not have to be for girls only. If you have access to old clothes, or period pieces (e.g., Civil War, the 1930s, etc.), put them on and take lots of pictures. Or, if you are able to make your own clothes, you can create great costumes for you, your sweetie, and your friends. If you want to take it a step further, you can organize a re-enactment of some kind. Or, make a short film. Just have a good time! That is the only rule. ~smile~ - Dare Each Other
Do you remember playing rousing rounds of Truth or Dare when you were a kid? If I recall, I chose truth a lot. ~smile~ The dares scared me just a little too much! Now you can play a great adult version of this childhood classic. Dare each other to do something silly in public, video the event, watch later, and laugh! You can make the dares fun, but not dangerous or morally bankrupt. You can dare your sweetie to take a random item from his apartment and try to sell it door-to-door. You can dare her to climb a tree and yell “I’m the queen of the world” at the top of her lungs. Those dares may even be boring for you – if so, ramp it up! ~smile~ Get out of your comfort zone and have some serious fun! - Eat Something Strange (but not deadly)
Ok, so ‘strange’ can mean something like worms, or ‘strange’ can mean a foreign cuisine you have not yet tried. I would probably lean more towards the latter version of strange! You can either go out for some unusual foods or cook them yourself! You can both cook a dish and then vote on which was weirder. If your friends are brave, they can come over for this uncommon meal and challenge (and perhaps not even tell them what they’re eating until the meal is over! [Make sure to account for any allergies before they consume the food though!]). You never know, but this new strange dish may become one of your favorites! Or, you may throw it in the trash and never speak of it again. Or, you may throw it in the trash and speak of it for years. ~smile~ - Pretend You Are Little Kids
If you find a playground that happens to be vacant, relive your early years. Slide, swing, play tag, make up games with ridiculous rules, and even fake a “kid” argument. You took my rock! You didn’t play my game right! You didn’t say the magic word so you aren’t allowed to play with me anymore! Oh, the memories. ~smile~ Enjoy experiencing childhood excitement and freedom again and then enjoy returning to mature-land later. People who know how to stay in touch with their inner-child can enjoy life and stay young longer than those who refuse to have fun or ever be silly, don’t you think?
Maybe your day of silliness can even coincide with one of your cheerful Spring Connection days!
What is the silliest activity you and your sweetie have enjoyed together?
