This morning, I was excited to go to a baby shower for a former co-worker. She glowed in her purple dress as she opened several wrapped adorable baby gifts. The room was packed and we all watched happily as she opened each item. She glowed and you couldn't help but feel her and her husband's joy as they anticipate the birth of their first child. As I surveyed the room, I thought of how important relationships are when it comes to these milestones in life. The mother to be is an extremely friendly and loving person. You can't be in her presence and leave in a bad mood. She has a way of … [Read more...]
Listening to Her Emotions is Important
Lately, I've been watching a show called Decision House on Hulu. It aired in 2007 and only had eleven episodes. The purpose of the show was to have couples who are on the brink of divorce come to work with a therapist, mediator, and other professionals to help them decide if they should stay together or go their separate ways. The show is obviously not created from a biblical, Christian world view... and at the same time, I love the fact that a secular show attempted to help couples work through their issues instead of simply telling them to divorce. In one of the last episodes I watched, … [Read more...]
Being Lost
Moving to Lynchburg to go to college was an adventure for me. For a small town girl that never moved, or even changed churches, leaving New Bern, NC, was the biggest adventure I'd ever taken. Thankfully, I came to college with Robin, a friend from home, so we went on this adventure and roomed together. After being on campus a few weeks, Robin's back started bothering her. She was in a near death car accident a few years before coming to Lynchburg and she needed regular chiropractic adjustments. She found a chiropractor and asked me to take her to her appointment. Well, the first time we went … [Read more...]
Complaining
If there is one thing that will surely put a damper on a good relationship, it is constant complaining. Complaining is such a way of life for many of us, and that is partially due to the fact that in America, we are used to having many things at our disposal. If our power goes out, we complain and act as if it is a travesty without thinking about the fact that many in our world will never know what it’s like to have electricity. Heaven forbid if the cable goes out or we are stuck in traffic on the way to work. Listen to others the next time you are out; count how many complaints you hear from … [Read more...]
Placing Importance on Saving Early
When Eric and I started dating, we ate out all the time. We went to movies and we had a blast. Many days per week, we – well, Eric – spent money. This is not abnormal when a couple doesn't live together and spends most of their time together outside of the house. However, this type of lifestyle and spending can easily follow a couple into their marriage. When a newlywed couple is working all day, there is such a temptation to get take-out food or to go out to a restaurant to keep from having to cook. With no kids and two incomes, why not? While I'm not suggesting that couples should never … [Read more...]
