Lately, my husband has introduced a new phrase to our household. When a movie, TV show, or song comes out that he believes we probably should not put into our minds, he asks "Does it pass the Philippians 4 test?" This means – does the movie, show, or song contain content that we, as believers, should be taking into our minds? Philippians 4:8 says, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." (ESV) I … [Read more...]
Why You Should Stay in Touch
When I visited my hometown last week, the realization of all the people I've lost touch with hit me hard. The town I grew up in is not super small, but the church I grew up in always reminded me of a small town where everybody knows everybody (and of course, everybody's business ~smile~). God blessed me with some wonderful friends, mentors, and family at that church. Even though I took it for granted at the time, I was never too far from someone who could give me a hug, an encouraging word, or prayer. When I first went away to college, I could not wait to get back to my home town and visit … [Read more...]
When to Say “I Love You” for the First Time in a Relationship
"I love you" are the three little words we all long to hear. They seem so simple and they roll off the tongue, but the meaning behind them is truly awe-inspiring. Too often, those precious words are uttered not to convey love, but to receive love. Maybe you or someone you know has experienced this. You find yourself in a new relationship, so overwhelmed with blissful feelings, and before you know it the words “I love you” come flying out of your mouth while you stand there in hope of receiving an "I love you too" in return. The beginnings of new relationships often do make people feel on … [Read more...]
What if…?
Planning for marriage is one of the most exciting times of our lives. If you are about to get married and you are not excited, you should probably stop and ask yourself why you aren't more energized. Most couples dream about their future together and discuss what they want out of life. This is a special time that all couples need before getting married. Like all newlywed couples, however, I found out quickly that our plans for our lives don't always pan out the way we expect. Life throws us all curve balls and the more prepared we are for those moments, the more smoothly we can traverse … [Read more...]
Why it is Important to Find your Calling and Passion Before Saying I Do?
“What did you want to be when you were a little boy/girl? Now, what was the first thing you thought of?” These are two of Eric's favorite questions to ask when he encounters people who are trying to determine their passion or calling in life. God made all of us with a specific purpose. None of us were put on Earth simply to float through life and anchor down our couches. Though I believe God takes pleasure in seeing us enjoy ourselves through play and fellowship with others, it seems evident through Scripture that He has a greater purpose for our lives than most of us realize. Passion is … [Read more...]
