Charlie “Tremendous” Jones often said, “Five years from now you’ll be the same person you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” What amazing insight! We are affected so deeply by the new people that come into our lives, but we are also deeply affected by what knowledge we acquire – and knowledge is often acquired through reading. However, when I first heard this quote, I was not especially excited about it…. I am someone who enjoys small gatherings of people that I know well and I am not a veracious reader. However, I married someone who likes to meet new people … [Read more...]
Your First Year of Marriage
This is my 100th post on this blog, so I wanted to make sure it was very important... so, I decided to talk about the first year of marriage. The impact of what you do in your first year of marriage is huge. Did you hear me? Okay, I'll say it again.... The impact of what you do in your first year of marriage is HUGE! Why? The first year is when you both create your "normal." Before marriage, assuming that you have not lived together before marriage, you have no idea how living with this person will look like (and even if you've lived with him or her prior to marriage, you still don't know what … [Read more...]
At the Movies
“What do you want to watch tonight?” “I don’t know, what do you want to watch tonight?” “I don’t know….” For most couples, the question of which movie to watch will come up from time to time. Some people love all kinds of movies. When you go to a movie with my friend Robin, she usually likes any genre that is playing. She can watch chainsaws in action for two hours and then turn around and watch an animated, girly love story. I, on the other hand, have more limited tastes in my movie selections. In short, I prefer to be uplifted in some way by watching a movie. I either want to be crying … [Read more...]
The Waiting Game
When I was younger, I was obsessed with the idea of getting married. At the time, I was not ready for marriage, which I knew; but, I was obsessed with worrying that he – whoever he was – would never come. What would I do if he never came? Yesterday, all of those feelings came back to my mind; and after six years of marriage, it seems silly to me that I spent all that time worrying when God, in His perfect plan, showed up at just the right time. Shortly after getting married, I started thinking about having babies. This is not uncommon for many women; but, after waiting to be a mother for a … [Read more...]
What a Woman Wants in a Marriage Proposal
Like most women, I used to wonder how my future husband would propose to me. I dreamed about it being near the ocean (I love the beach) and I wondered what he would say and how he would ask. While most women dream about their marriage proposal, I imagine many guys may worry about it. So, what makes a good proposal? In a word… planning. If our men are nervous during the act, we forgive them and think it's precious. If our men stumble over their proposal words and drop the ring in our spaghetti, we talk about how adorable he was for years. If our men deliver a flawless pre-proposal monologue … [Read more...]
