“Women need other women, men just need their wives.” What do you think of that statement? Does it seem to apply to the women you know? What about the men you know? Like all generalizations, this statement does not apply to everyone; however, it does apply to more couples than not. Women need to bond with other women. Laura Walker Jensen – in her book, Dated Jekyll, Married Hyde – writes, “Women need other women. Otherwise our poor husbands would bear the brunt of our shifting moods and emotions all the time.” Men, however, don’t have that deep need to bond with other men. They may joke … [Read more...]
The Nagging Gene (Book Review, Dated Jekyll, Married Hyde, Part 1)
Walk into the relationship section of any bookstore and you may become instantly overwhelmed. There is no lack of literature available to couples who want to improve their relationship, singles who want to prepare for a relationship, or divorcees who want to heal and move on with their lives. Relationships are serious business, but that doesn't mean we can’t laugh about them as we learn, right? That’s why I’m thankful for books like Dated Jekyll, Married Hyde by Laura Jensen Walker. She discusses some of the basic differences in men and women using humor to get her point across. It’s so … [Read more...]
What if You Marry a Risk-taker?
Close your eyes and consider the following scenarios: 1. You hear the -tick, tick, tick- of the inclining roller coaster and you know that any second you are going to plummet down, down, down and then be whisked back up into seven consecutive loops. 2. You and several other people are on a raft. The water is getting choppy. You aren’t sure, but you think a waterfall may be ahead. 3. You’re in an airplane and you've reached the correct altitude. You and a few others are getting ready to jump. You walk to the door with your parachute on your back, feel the wind in your face, and then … [Read more...]
Why I Can’t Stand the Song, “From This Moment On”
Please don’t get me wrong. I have nothing in the world against Shania Twain. As far as I’m concerned, she is incredibly talented and I like a lot of her music. However, one of her most popular songs, “From This Moment On,” has always rubbed me the wrong way. Perhaps it is because it came out around the time I was really starting to re-think the purpose of romantic relationships. I was asked to sing this song in a couple of weddings. It sounds so good... so ideal... but this song and songs like it set us up. We listen to this kind of “romantic love makes everything perfect” music and then we … [Read more...]
React to This!
It is a well-established fact that I get crazy-excited about discussing personality types and how they interact together. I was all set to leave church yesterday afternoon after visiting with some ladies when somebody brought up her Myers-Briggs Temperament Indicator (MBTI) score. So much for leaving! I plopped back down in a chair and was sad when one of the kids interrupted us and got us off the subject. I honestly think I could discuss it for hours without getting tired of it. I am fascinated with why people are the way they are... always have been! Personality Differences Personality … [Read more...]
