When you were a child, did your family ever put up an advent calendar in December? That was not a tradition held in my home, but I have seen a friend do it with her children. It is so much fun for them to run to the calendar, mark off another date, and watch Christmas come closer and closer! They can be a lot of fun for adults too (even if we do not so readily admit it).
Chocolate for my Girl!
When I was a teenager, I purchased a small advent calendar for a little girl I simply adored in our church. She is twenty-two now (which is making me feel all kinds of old)! Each date on the calendar contained a small piece of chocolate, and as she marked off the days until Christmas, she enjoyed a tiny treat. Of course, her mom required her to behave in order to get her chocolate. ~smile~ It made my heart happy to know she looked forward to that small prize each day.
Building a Blessings Advent Calendar Sounds Like a Blast To Me!
As I was thinking about our Year of Blessings and the exciting Christmas season ahead of us, it occurred to me that we can create advent calendars for our sweethearts or even friends! Depending on how crafty you are, you can build a beautiful masterpiece, or you can make something as simple as a hand-drawn, cardboard December calendar with small folded papers attached to each date.
As the month progresses, whoever receives your calendar can mark off the date and pull off the blessing associated with that date. You can do something like coupons (e.g., this entitles you to one free…) or you can wrap individual gifts to give on each day. There are dozens of ways to make it work! You can even construct a calendar with small boxes behind each date. When your sweetie or friend pushes through the paper, he or she will find a special blessing on the other side! Obviously, this would take a bit more work, but it may be worth it!
Create a Calendar for Each Other this Week!
As we begin the season of giving, this craft can be a fun way to celebrate Christmas all month. While we come down from our turkey high, many of us are putting up Christmas trees and preparing for a month of parties, shopping, and Christmas carols! Add this project to the list and have a lot of fun with it. It does not have to be fancy or expensive to be fun.
December 3rd – I want to bless you today with a dessert from your favorite bakery.
December 9th – I want to bless you today with this small bit of warmth (e.g., a pair of gloves, hand warmers, etc.).
December 20th – I want to bless you today by Christmas shopping with you and having a good attitude the whole time no matter how many people bump into me. ~smile~
There are many ways to rock this calendar project. In fact, if you are a comedian of sorts, you can bless your sweetheart by writing a new joke for each day of the month. If you write poetry, you can offer a new verse for each day. You can write a daily note highlighting a different character quality he or she possesses. You can make this calendar anything you want it to be!
The countdown to Christmas will officially begin on Thursday! You can have a calendar ready by then! We have faith in you! And, please feel free to post pictures on our Facebook page of your advent calendar creations!
What will you put in your blessings advent calendar?
