Premarital counseling can be one of the most enriching experiences of your life. This experience is set up to help you uncover aspects of your future spouse of which you may be unaware – or it may confirm your beliefs about him or her. Either way, premarital counseling is a valuable process for couples. Many couples have found that completing a rigorous premarital counseling program gives them a greater sense of peace before heading into marriage. Additionally, many clients we have worked with were astounded by how much they learned about themselves in the process.
At this stage in your relationship, you’ve already decided to get married. However, to get the most out of the premarital counseling process, it is best for each of you to evaluate yourselves and each other to see if you are truly ready for marriage.
How is this different than premarital counseling you would receive through a church? Though churches offer what they call “premarital counseling,” it often does not take the couple through a counseling process; rather, it is typically premarital education or only facilitated discussion. The premarital counseling curriculum we have developed covers very important topics not traditionally found in premarital counseling programs (the more traditional topics are covered in our pre-engagement curriculum); in line with the pre-engagement counseling, our premarital program dives even deeper. As opposed to other programs where a person can say the right things and get through unexposed; after going through premarital counseling with us, you will know each other (strengths, weaknesses, and long-term compatibility) so that you will still be sure that the person you have chosen for a spouse will be a good match for you. The cost of this counseling is very minor compared to what you may end up spending if the relationship becomes unhealthy; this is an investment for your future.
We have each earned a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and have worked with premarital clients since 2008.
If the couple has not gone through our pre-engagement counseling program, the topics found there will first be addressed. If the couple has completed our pre-engagement program, a couple can expect premarital counseling with us to include:
- Further Personality Analysis (Personal and Couple)
- Discussing Wedding Planning
- Physical Intimacy and the Wedding Night
- Community
- Living Routines
- Celebrations and Holidays
- The Sacredness of Marriage
- Parenting and Child Discipline
- Client-Specific Issues
- … and more!
