Please don’t get me wrong. I have nothing in the world against Shania Twain. As far as I’m concerned, she is incredibly talented and I like a lot of her music. However, one of her most popular songs, “From This Moment On,” has always rubbed me the wrong way. Perhaps it is because it came out around the time I was really starting to re-think the purpose of romantic relationships. I was asked to sing this song in a couple of weddings. It sounds so good... so ideal... but this song and songs like it set us up. We listen to this kind of “romantic love makes everything perfect” music and then we … [Read more...]
Three Steps of Action for an Indifferent Bride
Personality differences can hide for a while, but one place they become evident is in the wedding planning process. Growing up, I had this strange dream of others planning my wedding for me and me just showing up and getting married. Since I'm not a fan of stress and I didn't have anything I was determined to have in my wedding, I thought the less stressful approach was to not have an approach at all. My understanding of the groom's job in a wedding was to buy a ring, rent a tux, and show up. Eric had different plans. Eric is a driver. He doesn't do anything half way and he had specific … [Read more...]
The Wedding Dance of Wisdom
Recently, Eric and I attended a gorgeous outdoor wedding at Smith Mountain Lake (in Virginia). For those of you who are fans of the movie What About Bob, Smith Mountain Lake is where the 1991 blockbuster was filmed. The couple got married with the beautiful lake and a stunning mountain in the background. It was certainly one of the most beautiful weddings I've attended. The reception was equally beautiful, but one part stood out to me more than anything else. To preface, let me begin by saying I am terrified of dancing in public. Up until this wedding, I have refused to dance with Eric at … [Read more...]
Wedding Planning Considerations
Happy New Year! Today, I am ringing in the new year with a cold. If there is a record for how many times someone can blow her nose in one day, I am certain I broke it today! At one point this afternoon, I just squealed in frustration. Thankfully, Eric was outside with Ramsey (our golden retriever) and completely missed my mini-meltdown. I didn't think much about these completely crummy and gross days when I was a blushing bride to be. Last night when the Times Square New Year’s Eve ball dropped and hit midnight, I blew Eric a kiss from across the room (instead of kissing him with my cold). … [Read more...]
Don’t Stress About Your Wedding
I recently attended an out-of-state wedding with Heather where I am good friends with the bride. I was not only there to see the wedding, but to help out where I could. One of her aunts was in charge of decoration for the wedding and discovered that we were on the same decorating wavelength most of the time - so, she would give me various decorating tasks (one of which was to develop a tree out of garland from a wall corner - see picture on the left to see what I came up with!). During the decorating process, we were filling some large vases with very pretty blue and silver Christmas ball … [Read more...]
