In Revenge of the Sith (Episode III), Anakin’s arrogance reaches an all time high. He is spending less time learning from Obi-Wan and more time relying on his own understanding. This seems to parallel our choosing to lean on our own understanding instead of trusting the Lord. Chancellor Palpatine’s character made me uneasy in the first Star Wars movie. When Anakin was fighting Count Dooku to free Chancellor Palpatine, the chancellor told Anakin to kill Count Dooku after he had lost his weapon. Anakin didn’t want to kill Count Dooku since he was unarmed (as it wasn’t the Jedi way), but he … [Read more...]
Are You Asking for Trouble? (Star Wars, Part 2)
Have you ever had a crush that you could not shake – someone who found his or her way into your mind and heart for years on end? We find out that since Anakin Skywalker was about eight years old he thought about Padmé (Queen Amidala) everyday for the next ten years. Wow! I’ve had my share of crushes but none of them have lasted for ten years! (Unless you count my childhood crush on Michael J. Fox ~smile~) At the beginning of Attack of the Clones (Episode II), we find out that the galaxy is moving toward civil war. At the end of Episode I, Senator Palpatine is elected as Chancellor, but he … [Read more...]
Find a Marriage Jedi (Star Wars, Part 1)
To those of you who love Star Wars: I must confess, I was nineteen years old before I ever saw Episodes IV-VI. If it had not been for my friend, Robin, I would not have seen them at all. More than a decade later, my sweet Eric asked me to watch all the Star Wars movies and to blog about how each one relates to relationships. So, I spent several days watching each episode, taking notes, and trying to fully understand what was going on. It surprised me how much I enjoyed it, but I still think I would need to watch them all over again each to fully grasp everything. In the meantime, I will try … [Read more...]
Are You Worried about the Four Horsemen? (Four Horsemen, Part 6)
(Miss the beginning of this series? Check out the other posts!) Though I may not have been confident about everything in my future, before I married, I was quite confident that I was going to be good at marriage. After all, I studied marriage, I read books about marriage, and I wanted to help other people have good marriages. My life pretty much revolved around marriage – my future marriage and others’ marriages. And I found Eric. He also wanted to help couples with their relationships. He had a realistic (as much as he knew back then) picture of what marriage would be. So, we were … [Read more...]
Stonewalling – The Fourth Horseman (Four Horsemen, Part 5)
(Miss the beginning of this series? Check out the other posts!) When my brother-in-law was in college, he and some buddies decided to play a joke on one of their friends. They were on their way home from a road trip and while one of their buddies was asleep, they parked in front of a wall and, in unison, they all started screaming. So, the poor guy woke up in a car and saw a wall just feet in front of him. In terror, he joined in the screaming until he realized they weren’t moving. Wow. When he told me that story, I laughed until I cried. As mean as it was, I had to respect the … [Read more...]
