Creating good habits early in your marriage is crucially important in a Christian marriage. One such area where it is important to become consistent is… tithing. If you have been tithing regularly since you were young, this may not be a contentious topic for you. If you have not, it could even seem like a financial impossibility. In either case, let me encourage you... I have never met anyone who tithes faithfully destroyed over financial issues. In Malachi 3:10-12, God says "Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says … [Read more...]
Financial Peace University (Dave Ramsey)
It has been stated that 90% of marital breakups is attributed to money fights and money problems. It is crucial that you and your future spouse (or current spouse, if married) get on the same game plan with managing your money. I have never found a better program than Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University (FPU). If there is any way that you can find a church or organization near you that is hosting it, I strongly recommend going in person. It is a 13-week class and an investment in your future. You will not be sold to in this program - Dave just wants to teach you how he (and millions of … [Read more...]
Are You Ready to Afford Marriage and Children?
When a couple chooses to get married, they walk into the heightened possibility of having children. We all know at least one person who planned to wait several years to have kids who ended up being a mommy or daddy within the first year. As a result, for those getting married, children need to be considered and discussed prior to marriage. Topics need to be discussed such as: If we do get pregnant sooner than we expected, are we both going to work or are we going to live on … [Read more...]
Placing Importance on Saving Early
When Eric and I started dating, we ate out all the time. We went to movies and we had a blast. Many days per week, we – well, Eric – spent money. This is not abnormal when a couple doesn't live together and spends most of their time together outside of the house. However, this type of lifestyle and spending can easily follow a couple into their marriage. When a newlywed couple is working all day, there is such a temptation to get take-out food or to go out to a restaurant to keep from having to cook. With no kids and two incomes, why not? While I'm not suggesting that couples should never … [Read more...]
Everyone Can Win the Lottery
When I was in college, I decided to start a "fun money" savings fund. I found a cute, plastic, red piggy bank at the Dollar Tree, so I bought it and named it "Bacon." My plan for Bacon was to fill him with all my extra change, dollar bills hanging here and there, along with an occasional large bill, and to open him up on either my 25th birthday or my honeymoon, whichever came first. Little by little he started to fill up. I tried to keep pennies out of him as much as possible, so the day I opened him I'd have real money to work with. I figured that if I opened it on my 25th birthday, I could … [Read more...]
