In the year 1950, a film was made by Coronet Instructional Films on how a couple can realize how to tell if they are ready for marriage. There are many good conversation topics in here to work through as a couple and it's amazing how much they had right back then (though, I didn't agree with the length of engagement chart... as long as the couple has known each other and been around each other for at least a year, an extra year for engagement is normally plenty). The main male lead states, "I guess you might say, we're engaged to be engaged!" I couldn't have said it better myself. Even back … [Read more...]
Shake It Off! (Letting Go of the Little Things)
Sometimes I enjoy just sitting back and watching my dog, Ramsey, and my husband, Eric, play together. Eric likes to roughhouse with her, which she loves, but in the process she gets her ears flipped up, fur matted down, and tail tucked in a number of ways. When she's ready to stop playing, she jumps down, shakes herself off (flipping her ears down and getting her fur back in place) and moves on to the next activity. Sometimes we playfully agitate her to get a reaction (e.g., she always jerks her head when we blow on her face). Afterwards, she gets up, and shakes herself off. Once again, she … [Read more...]
Relationship Shadowing
When planning a career, one of the best things a person can do is shadow someone currently working in that profession. Interviewing the workers can be beneficial, but watching them perform their actual work helps bring your understanding of what they do to a higher level. When I was around fifteen years old, I was toying with the idea of going into law. My mom worked it out for me to volunteer a few hours a week in a law office in town, and I found out quickly that the law profession was not for me. A few weeks after I'd been there, I went to court to watch one of the attorneys in action. … [Read more...]
Impact the Way Your Significant Other Thinks
Charlie “Tremendous” Jones often said, “Five years from now you’ll be the same person you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” What amazing insight! We are affected so deeply by the new people that come into our lives, but we are also deeply affected by what knowledge we acquire – and knowledge is often acquired through reading. However, when I first heard this quote, I was not especially excited about it…. I am someone who enjoys small gatherings of people that I know well and I am not a veracious reader. However, I married someone who likes to meet new people … [Read more...]
Whose Relationship Advice Are You Taking?
For those of you familiar with Dave Ramsey, you may have heard him say, “Don't take money advice from broke people.” I completely agree with this statement… unless, of course, the broke people are telling you NOT to do the things they did with money. Similarly, it is not wise to take relationship advice from people whose relationships are unhealthy, in turmoil, or who jump around carelessly from one relationship to the next. We are most likely to take advice about relationships, and other important situations in our lives, from the people we know and trust the most. For most of us, we would … [Read more...]
