What picture crosses your mind when you think of a self-absorbed person? Up until a few weeks ago, I would have seen a woman living beyond her means, covered in glamour from her expensive salon hair down to her name-brand shoes. She would have been walking with an attitude in her step, talking on her cell phone, and using the words “like” and “whatever” in every sentence. She would have furrowed her brow at people not dressed to her standards and when she did not get her way – look out! What Self-Absorption Really Looks Like Lately, however, it’s come to my attention that … [Read more...]
What a Nightmare! (Did I love him?)
Do you have a tendency to dream vividly? For most of my life, my dreams have thoroughly entertained me; however, because my dreams are so lifelike, many of my dreams have left me feeling excessively happy or extremely uneasy. Once, I dreamed that I had a baby and then forgot him and the hospital and couldn’t figure out how to find him and get him back. It was a relief to wake up from that one. I cannot count the number of times I’ve dreamed that I was walking down the aisle toward a man I didn’t want to marry, only to turn around and run for the hills (and it may not help that Runaway Bride … [Read more...]
Guys, have you ever asked, “Why Won’t She Pursue Me?”
A few years ago, I recall having a conversation with a male friend about a new girl he liked. I asked him, “Why don’t you ask her out?” and he responded, “I figured if she liked me, she’d let me know.” His reply perplexed me then, but now such comments simply make me shake my head. No, she probably won’t let you know. She may be friendly. She may smile a lot in your presence. She may even go out of her way to be in your general path; but, she’s not likely to let you know she likes you unless she’s desperate or “liberated.” Women want (no, make that need) to be pursued. God created women to … [Read more...]
Are you Settling for Someone Second-Best?
My senior year of college brought me a lot of unanswered questions. While many of my peers were planning weddings, starting careers, or applying to graduate schools, I was still in limbo because I did not know my next move. There was the option of going back to my hometown, but with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, I did not expect to find a great job in a small town. So I considered graduate school, but I had not fully decided what graduate degree I wanted to pursue. My initial plan was to leave Liberty University and go to graduate school somewhere else, but I just didn't know what move to … [Read more...]
Are You Marrying to Please Someone Else?
On July 3rd, 2012, my heart broke when I heard that Andy Griffith had passed away. He was eighty-six, so he led a long life, but it hurt nonetheless. It’s true that I’ve never met him, but in some ways he felt like a distant relative. A native of my home state of North Carolina, I grew up watching Andy Griffith on The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock. Watching him on TV gave me a small glimpse into what life was like when my grandparents were in their prime and a glimpse into what it must have been like to be a child when my parents were kids. Call me a nerd, but I often find myself reciting … [Read more...]
