When I see the birthday parties which are thrown today for kids, I am sometimes left in complete awe. Maybe birthday parties have always been like this, but when I was a child we celebrated very differently. Perhaps it was because my extended family lived so close by, but almost all of my birthday parties were family parties. We got together, had cake and ice cream, and I opened gifts. What more could you ask for, really? ~smile~ When I was eight, I had my first “friend” party at the YMCA. Though it was fun, I did not expect a big party every year; and, I really don’t feel like my … [Read more...]
Showering Your Sweetie with Love on Birthdays! (Birthday Connections, Part 1)
This Saturday is my birthday! Even though I don’t get excited like I did as a kid, there is still something special about celebrating birthdays. Hopefully, I will never get too old to thank God for another revolution around the sun. ~smile~ Birthdays have a way of making us feel an exceptional level of appreciation and compassion towards the birthday boy or girl. On my sixth birthday, I cut my hair with my grandma’s hedge clippers. It was a mistake that would haunt my hair for the next twenty-four years – yes, years. That night, I fearfully faced my mother. She did not even notice my new … [Read more...]
Where Does Your Devotion Lie? (Happy 4th of July!)
Lately, I have become fascinated with American history. It did not matter much to me when I had to learn it in school; but, now that I’m older, it amazes me how far this country came in just a few hundred years. When I look at everything from the pilgrim’s determination to all the battles we fought for freedom, it is clear that God’s favor was on us. And even though so many want to deny it, this nation was founded on Christian principles. I love the Preamble to America’s Constitution: We the people... Of the United States, In order to form a more perfect union, Establish justice, … [Read more...]
How My Favorite Scriptures Impact My Marital Connection (Celebrating Easter, Part 6)
To bring our Celebrating Easter series to a close, I wanted to briefly share some of my favorite Scripture passages and take you on a small journey of my self-discovery. A few weeks ago, in our Sunday school class, one of our fellow students said that if you want to be a better spouse, don’t study marriage; rather, study Christ. It was a profound and true statement. It is important to prepare for marriage and it is great to learn communication tools and to glean from more experienced couples; but, at the end of the day, we will become better sweethearts and spouses if we study who Christ is … [Read more...]
Have a Post-Easter Celebration! Don’t Forget for Another Year (Celebrating Easter, Part 4)
Holidays are great... until they are over. I adore Christmas, but the pain of saying goodbye to the season and to my family is, at times, excruciating. Just because a specific day on the calendar has passed does not mean we have to stop celebrating! The birth of Christ is something we can observe year-round! Our Savior coming to earth in the form of a helpless baby is worth acknowledging more than a few days a year. March 3rd! Praise God for Jesus’ birth! July 17! Praise God for Jesus’ Birth! September 22nd! Praise God for Jesus’ birth! And, if His birth is worthy of an ongoing party, I … [Read more...]
