Nestled comfortably on the back of our couch are my two good friends – Instant Gratification Monkey and Panic Monster. A couple years ago, these two stuffed friends came to live with me on Christmas morning. Not long before, Eric and I discovered an amazing TED Talk on procrastination. Eric is the information vacuum around our house. He enjoys taking in piles of data and I am typically happy with a brief summary. In this case, however, I devoured this fourteen-minute video again and again. It was like Tim Urban looked into my soul before he wrote his speech. If you struggle with … [Read more...]
How to Love Your Acts of Service Partner (Love Language Practical Tips, Part 4)
The below post has been one of the most upvoted posts on our site. In this Year of Hindsight, we are revisiting several highly upvoted posts and are highlighting and updating them! I admire those of you who speak Acts of Service. You not only appreciate help so much, but you are also quick to give practical assistance to those you love. Since Acts of Service is low on my personal love language list, it does not always occur to me to show love in this way. I can sit on my friend’s couch all day and talk to her, but sometimes she needs me to help her get water out of her basement or keep her … [Read more...]
Our Themes in Hindsight
Near the end of 2013, Eric was inspired by a business coach he followed to dedicate each year to a specific theme. Not only did we incorporate the theme into the journey we took our readers on in our blog that upcoming year; we also used the theme as a reflective thought throughout our personal marriage that year. At first, I did not care for the idea; and, of course not... it was change. But, after a while, I started to see the value in declaring a theme. It gives focus to the year. Without it, an entire year can pass by with little growth to show for it. Below are all the themes we … [Read more...]
Twenty Questions to Ask Before Getting Engaged
“I want a man with brown hair and brown eyes. I want him to be a few years older than me. I want him to like Indianapolis Colts football, UNC basketball, and Atlanta Braves baseball. He needs to love my family and be a good dad.” My childhood list of “must haves” in a spouse were a bit on the superficial side! If only it was so easy to choose a mate based on eye color and professional sport preferences. Like everyone, I grew up and realized there is so much more to picking a lifetime mate than age and hobbies. There are cultural differences. Two Americans from different sides of the country … [Read more...]
Seven Reasons to Love Autumn
Though it is still quite hot in some areas of the USA, we are heading into my favorite time of year! Fall not only brings us pumpkin carving, Thanksgiving, and Christmas shopping; but, also beautiful colors, cooler weather, and a sense of the world calming down. (Well, most years anyway… lol) Fall is like preparing for naptime. The days get shorter, we snuggle up under warm blankets, birds start flying south, and we begin to rest. Eric and I are both fans of the changing seasons. The difference being that I want to experience the different seasons and he is happy to watch them from inside … [Read more...]
