Today, I wish my sweet Eric a very happy anniversary! {Eric’s note: And a very happy anniversary to you too, Heather!} Ten years ago today, we became an official “item;” and nine years ago today, we stood in front of a crowd at my home church and vowed to be together till death. We have come a long way since then! Some days, it is hard to believe we’ve been married nine years. Other days, I cannot believe we’ve only been married nine years. ~smile~ Let me just tell you – we are still together and happy by God’s grace. Month-iversaries (or Mensiversaries) Because we were officially … [Read more...]
Day Trip Packed with Fun! (Connection-Building Date Ideas, Part 4)
Sometimes, you just need to get away – you know what I’m saying? After being horsewhipped by the pressures of daily life, driving a half hour to shop can seem like a vacation. If you have small kids at home, going to the grocery store by yourself can seem like a getaway. One fantastic way to keep life from getting too mundane is by planning one-day road trips. We don’t recommend overnight trips together unless you are visiting family or traveling with a large group of people where temptation can be avoided. Being alone overnight, plus the excitement of vacation, can lead to regret. You’ll … [Read more...]
How to Make your Sweetie Bloom (Happy “Water a Flower” Day!)
Today is “Water a Flower” Day! In honor of such a festive occasion, I think we all should plant some flowers, water them, and watch them grow (or, in our case, hire someone to do it and have the rain water them ~smile~). Neither Eric nor I have a green thumb, but I do enjoy the flowers that bloom in my neighbors’ yard each year. Their house is close enough to us that it is almost like having beautiful blooms in our own yard. Since everything goes back to relationships with me, the act of watering flowers makes me think of couples watering and nourishing each other. Many couples “plant … [Read more...]
Connecting with your Sweetie’s Friends
Eric has some terrific friends – some solid, God-fearing, edifying friends. They are top-notch husbands and fathers and I am so glad they are not afraid to be honest with Eric (and vice versa, of course ~smile~). Eric was the first in his group of friends to get married; so, in the beginning, we were the “old married couple” and our single friends would come over for birthday parties and game nights. But a few short years later, they all got married and had children. So, our time together is not the same. We have to be intentional to make sure we all see each other. One of his friends lives … [Read more...]
Bullying – Connection’s Nemesis
If there is one action in this entire world I cannot stand, it is bullying. Even as a kid on the playground, I could not stand to hear or see another child bullied. On one hand, it is easy to hate the bully. He is a monster! She is an arrogant princess who lives to put other girls down! But truthfully, the bully is probably hurting immensely. What other reason do people have to push others down unless they feel lower than dirt themselves? Bullies often have a gang they are trying to impress, and there is almost always a wound in the bully’s heart that drives such vicious behavior. {Eric’s … [Read more...]
