I want more, More, MORE! Greed can be subtle or it can be obvious. Some people are always on the prowl looking for the next surefire money-making scheme. How can I get ahead? How can I accumulate more? How can I be on top? And some people’s greed is not as much for money as it is for power, attention, or even food (i.e., gluttony). Discontentment Greed is rooted in discontentment. Philippians 4:11-13 reminds us that we should find our contentment in Christ. “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in … [Read more...]
The Price of Disrespect (Connection Killers, Part 3)
What images come to mind when you think of a disrespectful person? Teenage boys vandalizing someone’s personal property? A girl sassing her father? A grown man burping at the dinner table? A woman yelling at her husband in front of some friends? All of these behaviors are indeed disrespectful. They all fit in with the definition of disrespect below: “Speech or behavior which shows that you do not think someone or something is valuable, important, etc. : lack of respect.” – Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary We Want to Feel Important to Someone One of the reasons we seek to be in … [Read more...]
The Price of Pride (Connection Killers, Part 2)
I've heard it said that the root of all of our sin is pride. What do you think? Was it pride which made Satan fall from grace? Is it pride which keeps us from humbling ourselves and repenting? Is pride why it is so hard to go to our sweeties and say, “I was wrong. Please forgive me.”? Personally, I don’t like to be wrong. Do you? It chips away at the part of my fallen nature that wants to be exalted. When we are cleansed and refined by God, one of the first characteristics to die in us is our pride. We have to let go of our will and humbly do His will in order to follow Him with our whole … [Read more...]
The Price of Selfishness (Connection Killers, Part 1)
Connections are awfully fragile. We may spend a lot of time building them, but it does not take nearly as long to break them down. A building which took a year to construct can be demolished or burned to the ground in a matter of hours. It is not enough to build connections with our loved ones. We must also guard those connections from harm. There are plenty of connection killers out there. Selfishness is certainly at the top of the culprit list. Building a lasting connection requires trust and we are more likely to trust those who are not always looking out for number one. Hiding … [Read more...]
Grab a Pan and Spatula! Cooking and Baking Together! (Connection-Building Date Ideas, Part 6)
Word to the wise... the cooking date is a great idea, but it is not for the faint of heart! Eric and I confess to you that we have not cooked together in a long time. ~smile~ Eric has a rule-follower style of cooking. If the recipe says to add 1 cup of chicken broth, 3 tablespoons of Cajun seasoning, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt, by golly that is what he is going to add – exactly. I, on the other hand, like to throw edible objects in a pan and hope for the best. Some would call that lazy; I prefer to call it artistic. ~wink~ To my knowledge, we did not cook together (at least not much) before … [Read more...]
