This Saturday is my birthday! Even though I don’t get excited like I did as a kid, there is still something special about celebrating birthdays. Hopefully, I will never get too old to thank God for another revolution around the sun. ~smile~ Birthdays have a way of making us feel an exceptional level of appreciation and compassion towards the birthday boy or girl. On my sixth birthday, I cut my hair with my grandma’s hedge clippers. It was a mistake that would haunt my hair for the next twenty-four years – yes, years. That night, I fearfully faced my mother. She did not even notice my new … [Read more...]
Seven Tips for Reconnecting after a Fight
Sharing a deep connection with the one you love is amazing – until it isn’t. Sometimes arguing with the one you love is just plain annoying. Why can’t we just get along and enjoy life together? Why is everything a battle? Eric and I have gone through seasons of ease and seasons of being constantly exasperated by the other. Why won’t she get going? Why won’t he calm down? Why won’t she be more outgoing? Why can’t he get it through his head that I’m an introvert? Why can’t she be more driven? Why can’t he be less driven? How Connecting with Friends Prepares you for Marriage
“Marriage is for adults.” That seems like an obvious statement, but all too often couples dive into marriage before they are “fully grown” emotionally. There is a reason we don’t pop out of the womb and immediately get married. We have to grow, learn, develop, and prepare for marriage – and friends are some of the best marriage preparation agents we could hope to find. Years ago, before I left for college, I remember a rather intense day trip with two of my friends. One of the three of us was simply not seeing eye-to-eye with the other two. She was edgy, cantankerous, easily angered, and … [Read more...]
Connection Memories: The Power of Reaching Out
When Eric and I married, we attended a church for a few years. For various reasons, it wasn’t the best match for us both as a couple. We then tried a number of churches to find the next church we could call home. We started attending this one church and I was finally getting to where I felt “okay” where we were. Then, one day on the ride home from the church we were attending, Eric said he really wanted to try a different church. A few of our former local clients had spoken so highly of their church, so he wanted to check it out. I’m sure I thought “Well, here we go again!” But, we visited … [Read more...]
Connecting When You Feel No Motivation
Some days, writing for this blog is hard. I sit down with my laptop and have the hardest time getting words down – after all, I want to make sure what I’m writing is worth reading. Still, distractions call me from all sides. I wonder if Susie has uploaded her vacation pictures to Facebook? I wonder what the difference is between a single camera and multi-camera comedy? I should eat something... again. On those days, I guess you could say I am just not motivated. After I reach a writing deadline (which I usually meet with mere minutes to spare), I usually write nothing the next day – not a … [Read more...]
