This week, I am dog sitting! We are keeping my "niece," Caramel, and she is currently snuggling up against my foot. Last night, after dinner, Eric cuddled up to our dog on one end of the bed, and Caramel stretched out between us. There was such a contented feeling in the room as we snuggled our fur babies. The presence of pets brings a lot of joy and comfort to our home. Our puppy (i.e., our six-year-old golden retriever) has blessed our house and our relationship. In fact, we have a hard time understanding people who do not want pets – even though we respect their decision. … [Read more...]
Marital Work as an Act of Worship
“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.” (Colossians 3:23-24, ESV) Growing up in church and hearing Scripture all my life, I did not realize these words come just below this familiar passage: “Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and do not be harsh with them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, lest they become discouraged. Bondservants, … [Read more...]
What Does Being a Husband or Wife Mean to Your Future Spouse?
Eric is one of the most transparent people I have ever known. You do not have to wonder what he thinks because he will be happy to tell you. Sometimes, I feel the urge to elbow him gently to keep him from saying too much in certain situations. ~smile~ Alternately, I do not say enough, which is also a problem! If you added us together and divided us by two, we would be an average person! In addition to saying what he thinks, Eric is not terribly concerned with impressing people. He is confident in who he is, what he knows, and what he has; so, he does not see the point in worrying about … [Read more...]
Is Your Relationship Pushing You Towards Your Purpose? (Being a Blessing Together, Part 3)
Me: “Eric, what is the main goal you have for your life?” Eric: “I want to help couples!” When it comes down to the nitty gritty, Eric and I want a similar end – we want to help people. Our desire does not always take on the same shape, and we certainly have different ways of going about it; yet, the end goal is the same. If we each drew a map of how to get to our goal, Eric’s path would be straight and efficient while mine would have off ramps, detours, and loops. However, we are both heading towards the same emerald city – and it does us good to remember that when we feel like we are … [Read more...]
Seven Ways to Bond While Blessing (Being a Blessing Together, Part 2)
Couples only have a short time to enjoy the dating and engagement phases before they take on the new responsibilities of wedded bliss. Though marriage can be a huge blessing, it is also very different than dating. I miss those carefree days when Eric and I would sit together and dream about our future. I love him to pieces, but I miss the butterflies in my tummy phase of our relationship sometimes! It is important to make the most of these days because they are not coming around again. Lord willing, wonderful adventures await you; but, at times, you will miss being single. Having said … [Read more...]
