Do you want to know my biggest relationship fear? Well, my biggest fear in interpersonal relationships is being in the way. If anything terrifies me, it is the thought of being unwanted, in the way, or annoying. I would rather Eric scream at me (which he does not) than calmly admit he has no use for me. Like many issues we deal with in our adulthoods, this fear goes way back to my earliest years. I was always the youngest everywhere I went. I was the one following the big kids around begging them to let me play. At my grandma’s house, I was the youngest cousin and I desperately wanted to be … [Read more...]
Blessings from Us to You! (October) – Twelve Questions to Ask Before You Marry
It is one of my earliest memories. My hometown in Eastern North Carolina experienced something pretty unusual that winter: snow! All the neighborhood children fled their homes, wrapped tightly in heavy coats, and frolicked in the white bliss we so rarely enjoyed. With glee, pre-school Heather ran outside to join in on the fun. Oh, to be young and unstained, assuming everyone in the world likes you as much as you like them. Well... Shortly after joining my neighborhood “friends,” I heard a little boy call my name. I turned just in time to be smacked in the face with a huge snowball. If my … [Read more...]
Blessing Your Pastor (Pastor Appreciation Day)
October is such a special month. Leaves are changing and the air is crisp and cool. People are getting pumped about the upcoming holidays and there is a sense of excitement in the air. Yet, another reason October is an exceptional month is... it is Pastor Appreciation Month (and, more specifically, October 9th is Pastor Appreciation Day)! Many people are guilty of taking their pastors for granted – and, I have surely been a part of this group as well. We get up on Sunday mornings, stretch, grumble about needing more sleep, and then fill our pews. Then, we sing, listen to a sermon, take good … [Read more...]
Happy Birthday to My Man!
Yesterday, my sweet man had a birthday. It is hard to believe we have celebrated thirteen birthdays together! I know it sounds cliché, but sometimes I do wonder where the years have gone. With each birthday, we are reminded that our lives are finite, and if we do not do something great with them, no one will do it for us! We do not have as much time as we think to make our mark on this world. I sincerely hope Eric had an excellent birthday experience. Indulge me for a moment as I ruminate on what this man means to me: Who Is This Guy? I first met Eric in PSYC 405 (Group Dynamics) in … [Read more...]
Blessings from Us to You! (September) – Dave Ramsey Prize Pack
I remember it like it was yesterday. Dad opened the closet door and with angels singing quietly in the background, he retrieved the sacred box which contained their one and only credit card. He surely did not know what a lasting impression that random moment would have on me and my understanding of finances. That small experience cemented a life-lesson into my mind: do not use your credit card foolishly. Do not whip it out and charge your way to “happiness” whenever you “need” a new purse or a fancy meal. By keeping the card locked away and ceremoniously retrieving it in certain circumstances, … [Read more...]
