Eric and I were recently watching "MasterChef" (a televised cooking competition series hosted by Chef Gordon Ramsay) and I heard one of the contestants talk about how amazing it was to hear Chef Ramsay say "Well done!" For a moment I thought, "Wow, to cook a dish good enough to have Chef Ramsay say "well done" would be so thrilling (he is an exacting perfectionist when it comes to food)! Immediately, I was convicted. The thought crossed my mind, "You find the prospect of receiving a 'Well done!' from an earthly, fallen creature as thrilling, but you read over 'Well done, my good and faithful … [Read more...]
Compatible and Complementary Humor
Looking for someone with a "good sense of humor" may fade into the superficial and unimportant when a physical attraction is so strong; but, I assure you, similar senses of humor make a huge difference in a relationship. Proverbs 17:22 (NLV) says "A cheerful heart is good medicine, but a broken spirit saps a person's strength." Let's face it, life is hard. There will be a number of days when it is all you can do to get out of bed and face the day. Show Me the Money!
As I've mentioned previously, along with every book discussing premarital issues, active money management is a must for a happy, healthy marriage. By "in order" I don't necessarily mean that money is flooding into your marriage and that you are in need of nothing; but, instead I mean that you and your spouse have a written, workable plan for … [Read more...]
Marriages that Last a Lifetime
On January 23rd, 1946, my grandparents were married. It was after World War II ended and Granddaddy had just returned home. My Granny's uncle met my Granddaddy overseas and showed him a picture of my Granny. She was fourteen at the time. He was interested in her at first sight. He began writing her letters every day and sometimes they were even twelve pages long. When Granny was fifteen, Granddaddy had ten days military leave and he came to Highpoint, NC to meet her. When he came in the door, she had a full table of food waiting for him. She had cooked it all herself and he knew he needed to … [Read more...]
Are You Ready to Deal with Your Selfishness?
When I was a child, I thought I was a pretty nice person. People complemented me for being polite. When kids were being picked on during recess, I took up for the underdog. There was even a time I was voted a "natural helper" in middle school because my classmates felt comfortable coming to me with their problems. Yes, I thought I was truly a selfless person. When I reached my teens, I had people come to me for advice, which I loved! Some of those people were my parents' age, which made me feel so mature. It seemed that I was always giving of myself to others. Then, I got married.... Nothing … [Read more...]
