When I was in college, I decided to start a "fun money" savings fund. I found a cute, plastic, red piggy bank at the Dollar Tree, so I bought it and named it "Bacon." My plan for Bacon was to fill him with all my extra change, dollar bills hanging here and there, along with an occasional large bill, and to open him up on either my 25th birthday or my honeymoon, whichever came first. Little by little he started to fill up. I tried to keep pennies out of him as much as possible, so the day I opened him I'd have real money to work with. I figured that if I opened it on my 25th birthday, I could … [Read more...]
Whom Are You Trying to Please?
For as long as I can remember, I have loved to sing. I haven't always been great at it, but whether it was in the car, in church, or just about anywhere, I have always loved to sing. At the age of twelve, I was thrown into my first church solo (which is good; otherwise, I may never have worked up the nerve to volunteer) – and from then until college, I sang at church regularly. While I wish I could say that each singing experience was a breath-taking display of God's anointing on my life, I have to admit that I spent much more time worrying about my performance before the congregation than I … [Read more...]
Love Your Future Spouse (Is God Really Your Lord?)
There are many people in America who call themselves "Christians." Additionally, there are many more who say that they "believe in God." If you walk the streets and ask around in small town America, you will probably find that many people consider themselves a "Christian." However, it seems odd to me that so many people who consider themselves Christians are living in a manner that is specifically prohibited in God's Word. The Lord really had to deal with me in this area. I was calling Him "Lord," but I was living like the world. I wasn't partaking in socially-unacceptable heinous sins, but I … [Read more...]
Sleep
In our fast-paced culture, we do not save enough time to get adequate rest. This may not seem like a topic that fits in with a “pre-engaged” blog, but from personal experience and from watching others, I believe it is a topic that needs to be covered. Not everyone needs the same amount of sleep, but by the time you are an adult, you usually have a pretty good idea of how much you need to be your best. For some, eight hours a night is essential. For others, five or six hours a night is required. Eight hours of sleep has always been needed for me to function. While I can get by on six or seven, … [Read more...]
The Reality of Rainy Days
Today, it is pouring down rain. It's relaxing and depressing – a strange combination. While it would be more convenient if it would stop raining, I find myself hoping it will continue to pour. It is so nice to sit on the couch with a book and the sound of rain all around me. If it were just me here, this would be no problem. I would read and watch movies all day, dozing off occasionally, and eventually forcing myself to exercise. However, with a puppy in the house, rainy days mean extra pent up energy and extra indoor exercises to get the energy out. Recently, I put her in her indoor exercise … [Read more...]
