Whoever said “Breaking up is hard to do” did not explain the half of it! Though breaking up is hard, it is not only the initial pain of the break up that people dread, but also the roller coaster of emotions experienced in the days and weeks following. It is the emptiness one battles, the awkward friendships, the redefining of oneself, and the development of the “new normal” that makes breaking up so tough. The good news about breaking up is that the pain does lessen. It does. And the more support you have from family, friends, and especially God, the easier the healing process will be. … [Read more...]
A Walk in the Park and a Picnic (Connection-Building Date Ideas, Part 3)
With this winter dragging on, even a home dweller like me is craving a good walk in the park! Seventy-five degrees, a nice breeze, green grass, and birds chirping! In the distance, there is a soccer game and kids playing on the swings. Adjacent to the walking path is the peaceful sound of water rushing down a small stream. Spring, come and hurry up!!! Connecting on Walks Walks are great for couples and friends. Sitting across the table from someone can feel intimidating at first, but there is something equalizing about walking together. Perhaps it is the fact that both people have a common … [Read more...]
Dancing and a Late Night Snack (Connection-Building Date Ideas, Part 2)
Dinner and dancing, or dancing and a late night snack, are classic dates; yet, I must confess that dancing is not my thing. However, enough people on this planet have gone dancing with a friend or sweetheart that I am fully aware couples do this as a dating activity. ~smile~ One of these days, I may say “Who cares how I look!?” and jump on the dance floor at a wedding; but, I do not believe that day is fast approaching. ~smile~ (Sorry, Eric!) Good, Old-Fashioned Dinner and a Movie (Connection-Building Date Ideas, Part 1)
As far as traditional dating goes, dinner and movie is probably the number one most popular activity. Dinner provides nourishment and a chance to talk; whereas, the movie provides an opportunity to be together without talking. Some consider movies a waste of time on a date, but I don’t think that has to be the case. If your motivation for a movie is to avoid talking and encourage physical closeness (i.e., the kind of closeness married people enjoy in private), then a movie is not a good idea. However, if you go to a movie with someone you really like, it can simply be a fun activity to … [Read more...]
A Biblical Take on Connecting with Others (Love and Connection Quotes, Part 3)
“By this we know love, that he laid down his life for us, and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.” – I John 3:16, ESV Think about Christ’s example. When He came to Earth, He did not hide in a cave and spend all of His time communing with the Father. It is tempting to see someone who locks himself away from the world to pray and read Scripture as more holy than someone who spends time with the Lord and then gives of himself to his family, friends, church, and community. It is recorded that Jesus spent time with the Father early in the morning and then ministered to others later in … [Read more...]
