“Just a few more hours at the office and I’ll be home. I’m sorry I won’t be able to tuck the kids in again tonight, but I am almost done with this project; and, if my boss likes it, I will be sure to get that promotion! Think of all the extra cash we’ll have! Living the dream, Baby!” “I know we are going to miss dinner again tonight, but the kids have soccer practice and ballet practice tonight. Tomorrow night, we have a meeting at their school, and Friday night we are hosting a dinner for the college group. Maybe someday we’ll all get to share a meal together again....” “I hate to … [Read more...]
The Price of Greed (Connection Killers, Part 4)
I want more, More, MORE! Greed can be subtle or it can be obvious. Some people are always on the prowl looking for the next surefire money-making scheme. How can I get ahead? How can I accumulate more? How can I be on top? And some people’s greed is not as much for money as it is for power, attention, or even food (i.e., gluttony). Discontentment Greed is rooted in discontentment. Philippians 4:11-13 reminds us that we should find our contentment in Christ. “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in … [Read more...]

Is pride why it is so hard to go to our sweeties and say, “I was wrong. Please forgive me.”? Personally, I don’t like to be wrong. Do you? It chips away at the part of my fallen nature that wants to be exalted. When we are cleansed and refined by God, one of the first characteristics to die in us is our pride. We have to let go of our will and humbly do His will in order to follow Him with our whole … [Read more...]
The Price of Selfishness (Connection Killers, Part 1)
Connections are awfully fragile. We may spend a lot of time building them, but it does not take nearly as long to break them down. A building which took a year to construct can be demolished or burned to the ground in a matter of hours. It is not enough to build connections with our loved ones. We must also guard those connections from harm. There are plenty of connection killers out there. Selfishness is certainly at the top of the culprit list. Building a lasting connection requires trust and we are more likely to trust those who are not always looking out for number one. Hiding … [Read more...]
