Twenty years and two days ago, I was leaving my community college math class. I was nineteen, not sure where I was heading in life, and was expecting that Tuesday to be like any other Tuesday. As a friend and I walked over to the snack bar, an older gentleman approached us and said, “They just flew a plane into the World Trade Center!” We walked inside the building and saw the live footage playing on the small, mounted TVs; and, the world froze for a moment. Those reading this article who are old enough, you surely still remember where you were when you heard the news. Shortly after … [Read more...]
Fight for Your Mind’s Freedom
Do you like to fill the room with background noise during the day, or do you prefer quiet? I love to keep some sort of entertainment rolling in the background almost all the time. Granny used to keep the TV on for company even though she gazed outside and daydreamed through it all. Background noise was her friend, and it is mine too! During the day, while I work at our kitchen table, I stream old TV shows from Hulu or Prime. Typically, I choose shows I have already seen dozens of times so I can enjoy the “company” without having to pay much attention to the story line. Lately, I must admit … [Read more...]
Thirty-Nine Reasons to Enjoy Getting Older (rather than dreading it)
Today is a day I could not imagine when I was a young lady... it seemed so far away. Today, I turn thirty-nine. Thirty-nine! Though I can still say that I am in my thirties for one more year, I feel my ascent to the fourth floor coming quickly. When I turned twenty-nine, it was as if my entire body started fighting against the inevitable. I cannot be turning thirty. I simply cannot. My twenties went by way too quickly! I spent the entire year dreading my next birthday. Not this time. Forty is coming, Lord willing, and I want to look forward to it rather than hiding from it with all my … [Read more...]
Next, Discuss Meeting Each Other’s Expectations
As I have mentioned previously, I did not have much life experience under my belt when I was engaged. Years of watching romantic comedies and dreaming of my own Prince Charming left me with my head in the clouds and my heart aflutter. Amid a lovey-dovey time in our relationship, Eric told me he wanted his future wife and family to abstain from eating pork and shellfish. He had his reasons (and still does), and he shared them with me. My response of agreement came quickly and without much thought. Captain and Tennille must have been in the same phase of their love story when they sang Love … [Read more...]
First, Discover Your Expectations
When I look back on my teen years, I smile thinking about all the expectations I had of my future spouse. Let’s suffice it to say the list was rather long including dark hair and brown eyes. I suppose the hair and eyes were just wishes; but, at any rate, I wanted an amazing husband. Perhaps I was a bit inexperienced (or, very inexperienced), but I had no idea what a quality spouse looked like – or that it had nothing to do with looks. Recently, I sat at the beach with some friends talking about how life has not gone as planned for each of us and our laughing about how our expectations have … [Read more...]
