Have you ever been in a job that sucked a bit of your soul away with each passing day? Have you ever been pushed into pursuing a career path or college major that you ended up hating, even if it seemed perfect for you on paper? Have you ever wondered, “Who am I and what was I put on Earth to do?”
If you have ever been in any of these situations, you are in good company. Colleges are filled with young students racing down the wrong path, and the workforce is crawling with people who would rather be somewhere else – anywhere else; but, they either do not believe they can make a career change or they are not sure which new career path to pursue.
When I was an academic advisor at a university, our career counselor told me about a meeting she had with a nursing major and the student’s mother. Though I do not know what this young lady scored on her career assessment, I clearly remember nursing was not her cup of tea. When the career counselor asked what led her to pick a profession for which she felt no passion, her mother sheepishly spoke up and said, “She chose it because of me.”
This well-meaning mother was not trying to dictate her daughter’s life. She wanted her to learn a valuable skill that would always be in demand so her child would never be without a livelihood. Her intentions were good; but, unfortunately, her advice was not. We thrive when we choose career paths which align themselves with who we are at our core. When we understand ourselves at that level, we are equipped to make informed decisions about how we spend our time, money, and energy.
Money is never a good enough reason to choose a career field. What good are loads of money if you hate your life’s work? We are meant to be who we were created to be. When we push against our true natures, we are unhappy and unfulfilled. It is that simple.
In honor of graduation season, we want to bless someone with a free Learn Your Calling session. Eric has helped several people, including myself, get to the bottom of who we are at our core. Since my session, so many internal questions have been answered and I am far more confident in making life-altering and everyday decisions. When I know an endeavor does not correspond with who I am (an empathizer), I do not have to feel anxious and guilty about letting the opportunity pass. There is no need to toss and turn wondering, “Did I just say no to something God meant for me to pursue?”
This is big, folks – of inestimable value!
