In celebration of our fiftieth post, our topic today is those who have been married for fifty years. I have been fascinated by couples who have been married at least fifty years. What a commitment to love and cherish the same person through so many stages of life! The joyful times are easy; however, in fifty years of marriage, most couples have been through the births of children and grandchildren along with the deaths of parents and other loved ones. In fifty years together, couples endure job losses, moves, temptations, health problems, and a good amount of disagreements. What a testimony it … [Read more...]
Memories that Shape Us: Miss Betty
When I was a kid I had a “Miss Betty.” If I could give a gift to every child in the world, I would give them all a Miss Betty. Miss Betty was a teacher at the school where my mom also taught and I met her when I was four. She and my mom became friends and I used to go over to her classroom occasionally after school. She was so busy, but she always treated me like I was very special, which is probably why I visited her all the time. When I was seven, my parents bought a house across the street from Miss Betty, and as you could imagine, I went to see her constantly. When I was eight, I named my … [Read more...]
Procrastination
Benjamin Franklin once said, "You may delay, but time will not." It is so easy to procrastinate, and thanks to all the things to do, buy, and watch in America, we are never at a loss for something to distract us from our less exciting tasks. We are all likely guilty of it to some degree as there is rarely a person who has all of their ducks in a row all of the time. However, if you do not stay on top of your tasks, they will eventually cause you stress – and, if it doesn't cause you stress, you can be fairly sure it will cause your future spouse some stress. When you get married, your spouse's … [Read more...]
The Productiveness of Worrying
Today, as I was leaving the grocery store, I passed a freezer full of bagged ice and I had to laugh at the advertisement on the door, "healthier than homemade." Really? My homemade ice is not as healthy as the grocery store ice? Seriously? I guess my water filter doesn't stack up to their water filter? My first thought upon reading this was, "I think we've gone too far…." If you find that you are having a pleasant day without a care in the world, then flip on the news… and in no time at all, you will find your mind full of things that can cause you to worry! Is worrying really necessary? Does … [Read more...]
The Dangers of Dating Too Early
American culture has changed significantly in the past sixty years. The 1950’s marked the start of what we might call “teen culture.” Prior to the 1950’s, people were classified into the dichotomy of children and adults. Children were taught trades and homemaking skills so that they were ready for adulthood responsibilities when they were older. Marriage also often occurred at earlier ages (most of your grandparents were probably married before the age of 20). My grandmother met my grandfather during World War II. My grandfather became friends with her brother, her brother gave him a picture … [Read more...]
