In my life, I have been blessed with many guardians. In addition to my wonderful parents, there are other adults who have taken the time to love and guide me through the dizzying seasons of childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. One such guardian is the mother of one of my dearest friends. During beach trips or long, late night talks, my friend's mom gave me much advice in regards to my romantic relationships. Like many young people, I didn't always want the advice. Although she advised me on a number of topics, the main lesson that sticks out in my mind is the sharing … [Read more...]
Culture Nights
We all have various cultures. We have the culture based on our nationality, culture based on our demographics, and the family culture in which we were raised. The family culture I personally experienced growing up was different than the family culture of my next door neighbor... even though we played in the same yard, went to the same school, and shared the same friends. Behind the doors of each home, there is a culture, and these unique cultures shape us. As we grow older and are exposed to more life experiences, we are influenced by new cultures. We meet new people from different places and … [Read more...]
Large Families Can Flourish
For my birthday this year, my friend gave me two DVD's of the Duggar family (17 Kids and Counting and 18 Kids and Counting). Looking at the cover was overwhelming and I'm not sure if I will ever be able to name them all without looking at a guide! Personally, I am looking forward to watching them and observing how they deal with certain situations. Sure, not everything will be covered in front of a camera, but there is still a lot to be learned. Sadly, many people consider the … [Read more...]
Relationship Weeds
Although my husband and I are often opposites, one of our major things in common is that we hate yard work. Anyone who has been to our house lately can attest to this. We are waiting for cooler weather to come and then we will hire someone to shape them up for us, hopefully in such a way that I can keep up with them on my own. The other day after coming home from an errand, I thought I would clear away a few weeds from around our AC unit. The unit was recently replaced and I did not want something as preventable as "weed damage" to harm it. Without thinking (remember, I already admitted my … [Read more...]
Obsessing over the Future
Selfishness is sneaky. Sometimes it comes upon us in socially acceptable ways. Perhaps we want something that the world thinks is good; but, do we want it so badly that we make it an idol in our lives? Has there ever been anyone who has not been consumed with wanting something? I think we all have… in some area of our lives. When I was younger, I was obsessed with the idea of getting married. At the time, I was not ready for marriage – and I knew that – but I was obsessed with worrying that he would never come. What would I do if he never came? Yesterday, all of those feelings came back to … [Read more...]
