Who doesn't love to travel for the holidays? Well, until I was grown, I never travelled. My entire family was within 20-30 minutes of each other and getting together was a cinch. I always saw my cousins every Christmas Eve night and I woke up in my own bed every Christmas morning. These days, it's different.... It will likely be different for our future children, too. With Eric's family in Idaho and Colorado (he grew up in California) and my family in North Carolina, we are always on the road for holidays. Because of this, one area of contention that often arises is leaving on time. When … [Read more...]
‘Tis the Season to Panic
Last week, I confessed to you all that I am a Christmas shopaholic. In addition, I tend to be a Christmas worry-aholic as well. In January, I have my gift budget in place and I enjoy browsing for gift ideas throughout the year. However, once December hits (and sometimes earlier), I begin worrying about the gifts I've purchased. Did I get everyone enough? Will they like what I bought them? Will Mom notice that she got one less package to open than Dad? Is Granny sick of getting word finds every year? Is Eric going to be disappointed with what I picked out for him? Are my friends sick of Bath … [Read more...]
The Three Gifts Which Will Make Him or Her Smile this Christmas
My name is Heather... and I am a Christmas shopaholic (… hi, Heather…). The day after Christmas is never too soon for me to start shopping for next Christmas (in my opinion). Some years, I have gifts for the next Christmas already purchased before the current Christmas season has passed. Eric is the practical, black and white, thinker in our family. If not for his good grasp of a dollar, I would spend up to half our money on gifts for … [Read more...]
What Will Matter in the End
In the past, I have written posts about beginning your life with the end in mind, but it has never been more real to me than it has been this week. My grandmother, who had a large part in raising my cousins and me, has recently moved into a nursing home. When I went to visit her this past week, I just looked at her tiny space and how her entire life now fits into a very small room. It is quite a mental adjustment for me. When I was a kid, she had a house full of items. At one time, she and Granddaddy had several refrigerators and freezers, all of them full of food. Each room had plenty of … [Read more...]
Asking for Help
Many of us don’t like asking others for help. It is a pride buster to admit to someone that you don’t have it all together, all the time. There are things with which I need help that aggravate me. I would like to be able to lift heavy things by myself. I would like to be able to figure out computer problems without pulling my hair out and making the problem worse. But, alas, I am not perfect, and I am often in need of help from others. A few years ago, I loved the TV show Wife Swap. For a while, I watched it faithfully until I became bored with it. While visiting my parents recently, I … [Read more...]
