Last night, I was pondering the topic of criticism and what part it plays in our lives. I can't remember meeting anyone who enjoys criticism. Some people seek it out simply so they can know how to improve various areas of their lives. Whereas, there are some people who don't like hearing how they can improve their lives, but after reflection, implement changes as a result of having someone point out a fault. Then, there are those who cannot seem to handle criticism at all. There is nothing fun about being told you aren't perfect. Let's face it – we all want to believe that our way is best. … [Read more...]
Similarities Will Help Your Future Marriage
When I was a teenager, my mom bought me the book Finding the Love of Your Life: Ten Principles for Choosing the Right Marriage Partner by Neil Clark Warren. In the middle of the book, there is a list of fifty helpful marriage similarities. Some of the items on the list are no brainers, such as views about alcohol, smoking, and drugs. However, a few items on the list were things I would not have thought up on my own.... For example, he listed temperature of home during day and night. This is not something commonly mentioned in pre-marital counseling - at least not the counseling which I have … [Read more...]
The Sugar Fast
A year ago today, Eric and I started a month-long sugar fast. In fact, it was not only sugar that we fasted – we also fasted anything with yeast, dairy, and coffee (among other items from which we were abstaining – it was part of the plan we were following). Eric researched the diet and thought that it was something good for us to do for our health. We agreed to wait until after the holidays to begin and I didn't think it would be so bad. After all, I can do anything for a month... just 30 days... right? January 2011 was one of the longest months of my life, bar none. I had no idea how … [Read more...]
Wedding Planning Considerations
Happy New Year! Today, I am ringing in the new year with a cold. If there is a record for how many times someone can blow her nose in one day, I am certain I broke it today! At one point this afternoon, I just squealed in frustration. Thankfully, Eric was outside with Ramsey (our golden retriever) and completely missed my mini-meltdown. I didn't think much about these completely crummy and gross days when I was a blushing bride to be. Last night when the Times Square New Year’s Eve ball dropped and hit midnight, I blew Eric a kiss from across the room (instead of kissing him with my cold). … [Read more...]
Stopping New Year’s Resolutions
The day after Christmas, and the week following, usually greets me with mixed emotions. When Christmas is over and I leave my hometown, I feel heaviness on my chest and just wish the holidays could have lasted a little longer. For someone who prepares for Christmas all year, it never ceases to amaze me how quickly it passes! And then there is anticipation.... I wonder what the New Year will bring. I hope for exciting things to come our way - and to our family and friends. New Year’s Day feels like a new beginning for me and (I would imagine) for many of you. No matter what happened in this … [Read more...]
