“She's so mature for her age!” That's what I used to hear all the time from my parent's, and grandparent's, friends. As an only child and a female raised in the South, I was expected to be polite when meeting people. Talking to adults the same way as I would talk to one of my peers was simply unacceptable. So, the result of being tall for my age, and polite, was the common misconception that I was more mature than other girls my age. Let me tell you... it went to my head. After hearing it for a while, I began to believe it wholeheartedly; and, since I was so mature for my age, I thought I … [Read more...]
Sleep… get some.
Sleep… get some. As I've mentioned before in previous posts, when two people are over tired, fights can break out. These are often senseless fights. Early in our marriage, Eric and I had our share of silly, late night “But you do not understand me!” fights; and, the next morning we'd wake up and ask ourselves, “What were we fighting about again?” Sleep seems optional when you're young. God designed our bodies to need sleep, so if we're avoiding sleep and not getting enough, we are paying a price even if we can't see it. Proper sleep is important for the following reasons: It helps our … [Read more...]
Get The Body You Want… in Minutes!
The video below is hilarious! Almost any woman in this culture could appreciate it! How many times have we found ourselves in the grocery store checkout in sweatpants when we run across about a thousand images of Hollywood women with perfect bodies? Regardless of how immune you think you are, after a while, you may begin to see your own body as inferior if you spend any time at all looking at the cover to almost any magazine. These pictures set us up for failure. Some people spend hours a day and thousands of dollars to look as perfect as those models; but, those models don't look like they do … [Read more...]
Are you a Hamburger, Burrito, or Salad?
We've all heard the phrase you are what you eat. If you are in the habit of eating salads and beans, you probably love that statement. It assures you that your body is made up of wonderful vitamins, nutrients, and energy. If you tend to enjoy fried, processed, sugary foods (like me), you are likely averse to analogizing that you are a Krispy Kreme doughnut, McDonald’s Big Mac, or Hershey chocolate bar. Sadly, I must admit that the previous statements, at least in part, are true. Our souls and personalities are obviously not defined by what we eat; but, our ability to function is greatly … [Read more...]
Why what People say about You may not be a Reflection of You
At various times in my life, I have been guilty of taking things too personally. Sometimes it comes as a result of my already being a little out of sorts and other times people just say things that hurt me to the core. The other day, I saw a quote and I took a picture of it so I'd remember it: “Try not to take things personally; what people often say is a reflection of them and not you.” This is so true; yet, there are many of us who are incredibly sensitive to insults or hurtful joking. When I was a young teen, I heard someone call me a geek right before I had to take a test. This girl … [Read more...]
