Over a year ago, I sat down to write a blog on the fantasy of marriage while my golden retriever puppy, Ramsey, whined her fluffy little head off. It was almost impossible to concentrate on writing due to her relentless screams for attention. She made it clear who she thought was in charge! ~smile~ In the post, I made a profound comparison.... At the time, I compared the fantasy of bringing home a perfect, adorable puppy to the fantasy I once had of bringing home a perfect, adorable husband. In the same way that my dream of owning a perfect blonde doggie died when I brought home a stubborn, … [Read more...]
Get A Pop Up Blocker for Your Life
This past Thursday, I went to my Ladies Bible study and posed a question about forgiveness. It has come to my attention that I struggle to let hurts and situations go. I've also noticed others who have endured numerous betrayals and abandonments in their lives forgive their perpetrators more easily than I forgive small offenses from others. I was hoping the ladies in my church could tell me how God has helped them to forgive. While I was explaining my situation, I told them that sometimes I think I have forgiven someone only to have his or her offense towards me pop back into my mind and … [Read more...]
What Does Your Spiritual Heritage Reveal About You?
A few weeks ago, I visited my parents in North Carolina. Mom and I took a drive through the country and visited a few of my great uncles. My Uncle Willie, age 89, answered the door with a straight back and a spry welcome! Regardless of his age, he has as great a sense of humor as he ever did (this is the uncle who said, “Be careful who you marry, because the only thing worse than being lonely is wishing you were!”) and I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him talk about the old days. After we'd been there a while, he made mention of a tent revival that came through my home town back in the … [Read more...]
The Mysterious Metal Box
A few years ago, I attended a bridal shower for a co-worker at Olive Garden. Before she opened her gifts, our boss presented the bride-to-be with a decorated box and then proceeded to read a story explaining the purpose of the mysterious metal box... She read about a young couple who got married with very little money. They weren't able to take a long honeymoon, but they planned a dream vacation to Hawaii. They decided every time they made love (my boss looked over her shoulder and whispered when she read that part) they would put a dollar in a metal box towards their Hawaii fund. Five kids … [Read more...]
Does it pass the Philippians 4 Test?
Lately, my husband has introduced a new phrase to our household. When a movie, TV show, or song comes out that he believes we probably should not put into our minds, he asks "Does it pass the Philippians 4 test?" This means – does the movie, show, or song contain content that we, as believers, should be taking into our minds? Philippians 4:8 says, "Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." (ESV) I … [Read more...]
