Recently, Eric and I attended a gorgeous outdoor wedding at Smith Mountain Lake (in Virginia). For those of you who are fans of the movie What About Bob, Smith Mountain Lake is where the 1991 blockbuster was filmed. The couple got married with the beautiful lake and a stunning mountain in the background. It was certainly one of the most beautiful weddings I've attended. The reception was equally beautiful, but one part stood out to me more than anything else. To preface, let me begin by saying I am terrified of dancing in public. Up until this wedding, I have refused to dance with Eric at … [Read more...]
The Importance of Maturity in Marriage
Studies have shown that waiting until you are older to marry (twenty-five and up) dramatically reduces your chances of divorce. It gives you time to really know and understand yourself, to understand what you need in a spouse, and what you have to offer a spouse. Marriages of people younger than twenty-five, however, are not automatically doomed. I've known several thriving marriages of couples who married young; however, one of the common denominators among those young couples with flourishing marriages was maturity. What are Your Relationship’s Privacy Settings?
Some days it would be easier if we all just understood each other. Sure, it would be boring, but at least we wouldn't be dumbfounded when people react to the world in a completely different way than we expect. Whatever makes sense to us can seem like the only way to live. Sometimes I'll whisper something to someone and moments later that same someone is blurting it out to the world. Have you ever watched chickens interact with each other? Watching chickens peck at the ground can be nice and relaxing until they turn on each other. Each flock of chickens has a pecking order. If you're at the top, you don't get pecked. If you are not at the top, you get pecked by someone higher on the pecking order and then you get to peck someone who is lower on the pecking order. If you are at the bottom of the pecking order, that's when they start pecking other objects (e.g., a human’s foot). My mom had a chicken that was incubated and hatched in her second grade classroom. After … [Read more...]
Ways Your Future Spouse’s Career Will Affect You
One important detail to know about your guy or gal before falling head over heels for him or her is what career path he or she is taking (or would like to take). This may seem like a trivial piece of information in the early stages of a relationship, but it is something that will affect you for years, if not the rest of your life, should you choose to marry each other. Think about your own personality. If you marry someone with political aspirations, are you prepared to meet a lot of people, be in the public eye, and host dinners or other events? If you marry someone in the medical … [Read more...]
