I found the first love poem I ever wrote to a boy. This masterpiece was completed when I was twelve-years-old and the boy for whom it was penned shall remain nameless. After I finished it, I could not wait to show it to my mom because I was so proud of it. Her response disappointed me a bit. Her smile got bigger and bigger until she finally… burst out laughing! Reading it as an adult, I can now fully understand her reaction. Here it is, reproduced for your amusement: In the very inner depths of my heart, you, a dry match, created a spark. Over time, that spark expanded in flames, which … [Read more...]
Are you Settling for Someone Second-Best?
My senior year of college brought me a lot of unanswered questions. While many of my peers were planning weddings, starting careers, or applying to graduate schools, I was still in limbo because I did not know my next move. There was the option of going back to my hometown, but with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, I did not expect to find a great job in a small town. So I considered graduate school, but I had not fully decided what graduate degree I wanted to pursue. My initial plan was to leave Liberty University and go to graduate school somewhere else, but I just didn't know what move to … [Read more...]
How to Save Your Future Marriage Tons of Arguments
As a child, I remember my mom telling me repeatedly that a soft answer turns away wrath (Proverbs 15:1). I didn’t always want to hear it, but she was certainly correct (as was King Solomon)! There is something so powerful in how we speak to one another. The same statement can be taken with ease or with anger depending on how we say it. If you get married and get in the habit of being snippy with your spouse, you can expect your spouse to eventually get tired of it and retaliate in anger. If you are in the habit of being snippy, you might not even realize when you’re doing it! In addition to … [Read more...]
Are You Marrying to Please Someone Else?
On July 3rd, 2012, my heart broke when I heard that Andy Griffith had passed away. He was eighty-six, so he led a long life, but it hurt nonetheless. It’s true that I’ve never met him, but in some ways he felt like a distant relative. A native of my home state of North Carolina, I grew up watching Andy Griffith on The Andy Griffith Show and Matlock. Watching him on TV gave me a small glimpse into what life was like when my grandparents were in their prime and a glimpse into what it must have been like to be a child when my parents were kids. Call me a nerd, but I often find myself reciting … [Read more...]
Intimate Expectations (Preparing for Sex in Marriage)
As uncomfortable as some people are discussing it, sex is a huge part of marriage, and one for which you should prepare. And by prepare, I do not mean practice. ~smile~ In preparing for intimacy in marriage, you need to understand how your body works and how your future spouse’s body works (i.e. the sexual differences between males and females). You also need to understand how your parents’, friends’, and televisions’ views of sex have influenced you, and what you think is normal. You also need to know what your future spouse expects. Believe me, that is something you will want to know before … [Read more...]
