One of the most surreal days of my life was the day my Granddaddy died. As a ten-year-old fifth grader, death was not on my radar. Granddaddy was diabetic, but he showed no signs of feeling poorly. The Saturday before he died, I remember him going with us to pick my cousin up from baseball practice. The day after, I saw him at church, and then he went to a family reunion (and thankfully he had the time of his life). Then Monday came. He and Granny ran some errands, he ate lunch, and then he went to take a nap. Before he walked into the bedroom to lie down, he looked at my grandma and told … [Read more...]
Avoiding Conflict on a Saturday Night
One of the most common mistakes that comes along with conflict is attacking the person when you should be attacking the problem. How many times have you done it? You start off disagreeing with your boyfriend, girlfriend, family member, or friend, and before you know it you stop talking about the problem and start denigrating the person. For example, let’s say Eric and I start off by disagreeing about what we should do on a Saturday night. Maybe I want to go out to a restaurant with Eric and then come home and watch a movie. Eric wants to have friends over to play games and eat dessert. If … [Read more...]

What is Your Next Big Win?
Does it ever seem like the hardest part of a new project is simply starting it? The hardest part of exercise (or at least the part that I dread the most) is getting my exercise clothes on and tying my shoes. Once I actually start walking, running on the elliptical, or warming up with an exercise DVD, I’m fine. Just putting one foot in front of the other and making myself start is the biggest challenge. This is also true with term papers, home projects, and most unpleasant tasks we tend to put off until tomorrow. When you are dreading something, remember that beginning a task is the hardest … [Read more...]
How to Turn Down an Awkward Date Request
Have you ever gone to great lengths to avoid going on a date with someone? When my maternal grandmother was in high school, a young man asked her for a date repeatedly. After turning him down multiple times, she finally relented and accepted his invitation. As the day of the date drew closer, she started dreading it. Have you ever experienced that sick feeling in your gut when you're dreading something? When he showed up for their date, my great grandmother (her mother) sat with him in the living room and made small talk. Apparently the stress of going on a date with him proved to be too … [Read more...]
