When Eric and I married, we attended a church for a few years. For various reasons, it wasn’t the best match for us both as a couple. We then tried a number of churches to find the next church we could call home. We started attending this one church and I was finally getting to where I felt “okay” where we were. Then, one day on the ride home from the church we were attending, Eric said he really wanted to try a different church. A few of our former local clients had spoken so highly of their church, so he wanted to check it out. I’m sure I thought “Well, here we go again!” But, we visited … [Read more...]
Connecting When You Feel No Motivation
Some days, writing for this blog is hard. I sit down with my laptop and have the hardest time getting words down – after all, I want to make sure what I’m writing is worth reading. Still, distractions call me from all sides. I wonder if Susie has uploaded her vacation pictures to Facebook? I wonder what the difference is between a single camera and multi-camera comedy? I should eat something... again. On those days, I guess you could say I am just not motivated. After I reach a writing deadline (which I usually meet with mere minutes to spare), I usually write nothing the next day – not a … [Read more...]
Three Tips for Connecting with Your Opposite
Whenever I need to feel like a kid again, I can just pop The Sound of Music into the DVD player and let the last twenty years melt away. I don’t think there is an actor or actress alive who is as soothing as Julie Andrews is to me. I love Captain Von Trapp and Fraulein Maria’s love story in film because they grew to love each other (versus falling in love at first sight) – and because they loved each other despite their opposite personalities. There is no telling why I am inspired by such stories. ~wink~ Movies can teach us a lot, if we are paying attention. For that reason, we should be … [Read more...]
Memories that Shape Us: Special Delivery… Friend for Heather
Twelve years ago, I was a nervous homebody who was about to set off on a college adventure. After two years of community college, and digging my heels in as far as they could go, I knew I had to leave the nest for college. In fact, on this day (twelve years ago), I sang my last church solo, “I Don’t Want to Go” by Avalon. ~smile~ While many teenagers begin marking down the days to college from their first week in high school, I was the girl who never wanted to leave. In fact, I dreamed of my cousins and me owning a giant house where all of our future families could live and grow up … [Read more...]
Reframing Your Negatives (The Power of Attitude, Part 3)
The weekend is upon us! A few more work hours and then we can declare “party time” until Monday. Maybe this is your approach to the weekend, or maybe you dread the weekend because you have to work, or the traffic is worse. However you feel about the two days sandwiched in between Friday and Monday, let me be the first to say, “Have a great weekend!” Shut Out the Negative Everywhere we turn, there are negatives. The news is full of bad news. When I was watching Fox News faithfully, I felt more on edge. It is good to be informed, but watching it constantly and dwelling on all the crises and … [Read more...]
