It has been estimated that about 20% of the world’s population watched Prince William and Kate Middleton join together in holy matrimony. Yet one of the interesting things that piqued my interest was that Kate wanted the traditional vows changed. Apparently, she did not want to vow to “love, honor, and obey” her husband; rather, she vowed to “love and cherish” her husband. Take a look and watch.
What I find interesting is the combination of these two things:
1. Kate Middleton purposely took out of the vows to “honor and obey” her husband.
2. Two sentences later in her vow, she states that these vows were “according to God’s holy law.”
The reason why I find it interesting is because here is what God’s holy law states (i.e., the Bible) in I Peter 3:1-2,5-6: “Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct. … For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord.”
Of course, this does not give license to the husband to be a tyrant or unloving as Peter quickly after the above admonishes husbands to live with their wives in an understanding way showing honor to her so that his prayers may not be hindered.
