If I were in a long distance relationship, I would be jealous of my friends who lived near their sweeties. No matter how many benefits we can gain by being apart, the time comes when a man and woman who love each other want to be together! That is completely normal, and I would be concerned if I met a couple who was completely unaffected by their distance.
While you are waiting to be together permanently, consider the following three ways you can connect from a distance.
- Go on a Virtual Date! I heard Eric mention this idea to a couple a while back, and I think it could be quite entertaining. Since we are living in a world of iPhones, iPads, and other tablets, why not go on a date together via FaceTime, Skype, or Google Hangouts? It would be especially hilarious if you went to the same restaurant or coffee shop. “Cincinnati Pizza Hut reporting to Tucson Pizza Hut. Come in, Tucson!” Then, you could both go for a walk beside a body of water in your respective towns. End the evening by getting dessert and watching the same movie. ~smile~ Creativity is the name of the game. See what adventures you can go on together with the help of technology!
- Send Each Other Old-Fashioned Letters! When my grandfather was in World War II, he met my great uncle who gave him a picture of my fourteen-year-old grandma. ~smile~ Being the beauty that she was, my grandfather started sending her letters. Other than one visit when he came home on leave, my grandparents corresponded solely through letters for three years. He would write to her every single day, and he would even write to her mother! ~smile~ When he returned home from the war, he visited my grandmother again; and, within five days they were man and wife. Letters are powerful means of communication! There is something about the thrill of opening the mailbox and finding a letter which knows no comparison! Granny and Granddaddy got to know each other very well through old fashion letter writing, and I think you and your sweetie can capture some 1940’s style romance if you give it a try. (Sadly, my grandma burned the letters after she married. Oh, what I would give to have even one of those letters now!)
- Prioritize Visits and Daily Communication. Letters are beautiful, but since modern technology has made our world seem so much smaller, travel and verbal communication can be achieved by most long distance couples. In addition to sweet letters, couples should prioritize phone calls and visits. Based on finances and locations, traveling is easier for some than others; but, at least try to see each other on a regular basis. In the meantime, utilize your phone and tablet for daily communication. Text each other small messages throughout the day, if possible. Let the other know you are thinking of him or her. Send gifts in the mail at random. Make it a point to shower each other with affection as much as possible given your physical constraints. If you take the time to creatively communicate, and are willing to work through the conflicts you could so easily ignore, you and your sweetie can have a powerful connection across the miles!
These are three simple ways to connect with your sweetie while you are apart. What other ways can you think of to keep your friendship growing and your love flourishing? Have either of you considered creating an online support group for long distance couples? It could be a great way to connect with other people who are going through the same challenges, to make lasting friendships, and to gain support and ideas as you move forward. It’s an idea worth contemplating. ~wink~
