Good news! According to holidayinsights.com, today is Make Your Dream Come True Day! Sounds good to me! We all have dreams we want to see fulfilled and making your dreams come true with someone special is a terrific bonding experience! There are the big dreams, such as becoming a partner in a law firm or finding a cure for cancer; whereas, there are the smaller dreams, such as learning to do a cartwheel, zip-lining, or seeing your favorite wild animal up close and personal.
Big Dreams
Some dreams cannot be fulfilled in one day. These are the dreams we want our loved ones to support – even if they take several years. Research has shown those who have strong support systems are more likely to achieve their goals and see their dreams come true than those who have no support system or a negative support system (i.e., families or social groups who constantly discourage their loved ones’ dreams). This is not to say that people have to have cheerleaders to make it in this world; but, I believe success is more likely when we are not alone.
Before getting married, it is important to know your sweetie’s dreams. You will want to know if you can support them or not; and then, you will need to commit to supporting them. One of the joys of marriage is having someone in your corner lifting your head, bandaging your bruises, and refusing to let you give up! Do not get married unless you are confident that you and your sweetie can be that supportive person for each other!
Smaller Dreams
Small dreams are not necessarily unimportant dreams. They are just dreams which are easier to fulfill. Dreaming of a vacation at the beach. Dreaming of starting a garden. Dreaming of learning to cook better dishes. Smaller dreams (or in many cases, goals) can often be quickly and easily realized and these dreams will naturally come throughout one’s life. You cannot know all the future dreams your sweetheart will dream in his or her lifetime, so marriage requires some faith and determination. In a sense, you are saying “I do” to your sweetheart’s undiscovered passions. Your future spouse’s dreams will not always be convenient for you and that is when you have to say, “I love this person and I am determined to help him or her reach new heights.” Do not get married until you are able to say that and mean it. ~smile~
Connect through your Dreams
There is a scene in the movie, A Walk to Remember (an excellent book, by the way), when Jamie tells Landon several experiences she wants to have in life, including being in two places at once. Later in the movie, Landon takes Jamie to the North Carolina/Virginia state line and without explaining his mission to her, he has her put one foot on both sides of the line. Then he says, “You’re in two places at once.” (I think it is about time to watch this movie again! ~smile~)
Helping to fulfill each other’s dreams is a powerful way to connect. Recently, I began sharing my desire to make changes in our diet; yet, in order to do so, I needed a rather expensive kitchen “gadget.” So Eric took his personal spending money which he has saved for months (we sometimes refer to this as “blow” money) and ordered it for me! His sacrifice made me feel so incredibly loved, heard, understood, and important to him. He helped me fulfill a small dream and it brought us closer together.
Helping make each other’s dreams come true does not always cost money. Sometimes, it simply costs time and energy. Like Landon taking Jamie to the state line, some dreams can be fulfilled with a tank of gas and a little imagination.
One of Eric’s biggest dreams is to fulfill God’s calling on his life and helping Him fulfill that dream is a part of my everyday life – even when it is not obvious (such as cooking and cleaning for our home). One of my biggest dreams is to get healthy and know what it feels like to be fit and content and Eric continues to support that dream in a plethora of ways.
If you want to connect with your special someone on a deeper level, find out what is important to him or her at his or her core and do what you can to see that those dreams are fulfilled. On the flip side, if you want to kill connectedness with your sweetie, ignore the passions of his or her heart. That is a surefire connection-breaking scheme.
